About the play

Two lovestruck students need a respectable chaperone for the day but when she fails to arrive, one friend steps into the role with an outrageous disguise with gloriously chaotic results. Rob Madge’s joyful new take on Charley’s Aunt gives the classic farce a fresh twist, celebrating love, identity and the sheer fun of getting splendidly carried away.

Time

Slightly anachronistic 1890’s

Location

Oxford, England

Style and Genre

Fast-paced, high-spirited farce

Characters

Rob Madge’s adaptation is a decidedly queer version of the play, and I very much want to celebrate that, and honour their request to cast a gender fluid person in the role of Babbs.

JACK CHESNEY    Early 20’s. Student at Oxford, terribly posh

CHARLEY WYKEHAM   Early 20’s. Student at Oxford, equally posh, and Donna Lucia’s nephew

KITTY VERDUN   Early 20’s. Ward of Lord Spettigue, also a little posh

AMY SPETTIGUE  Early 20’s. Niece of Lord Spettigue, quite posh as well

BABBS  20’s. Lord Spettigue’s butler – played by a gender fluid actor

LORD SPETTIGUE  50’s – 60’s. Amy’s uncle, Kitty’s guardian, certainly posh

DONNA LUCIA D’ALVADOREZ  40’s – 60’s. Charley’s aunt, Eli’s guardian

ELI DELAHAY  20’s. Donna Lucia’s ward
