About the play

Expecting your first child should be the happiest of times. But as money grows tight and impossible choices loom, one young couple are pushed to their limits. This powerful drama explores love, responsibility and the moral compromises we make to survive. Intimate and haunting, The Nest asks what any of us might sacrifice for the people we love.

Characters

The ages of Martha and Kurt are flexible, from their 20’s to late 30’s.

I’m looking for two actors who can create the authenticity of a young, loving Irish couple expecting their first baby. The relationship between Kurt and Martha is at the heart of the play, so I’m particularly interested in actors who can create a convincing connection and make their relationship feel natural and “lived-in”.

Both roles require a range of emotions as the characters’ circumstances change throughout the play. The ability to find humour, warmth and tenderness, alongside the darker and more challenging moments, will be important.

Audition pieces

Page 17 from Kurt “Don’t be sorry.” to end of scene

Page 21 from Kurt “That’s nice!” to page 22 Kurt “Well, I’ll tell you.  I’m taking it all in”

Page 30 from Kurt “He said it was wine gone off!” to end of scene

Please don’t feel that you need to “perform” the scenes in a particular way. I’m interested in seeing how you listen, respond and build a relationship with your scene partner. The more natural and truthful the interaction feels, the better.

An authentic Irish accent is essential for the play, but I’m more interested in truthful characterisation and connection rather than a perfect Irish accent.  This is something we can work on during the rehearsal process.
