By re-imagining Sheridan’s ‘The Rivals’ to an RAF squadron stationed at a Sussex country house during the Battle of Britain, Richard Bean and Oliver Chris create something every bit as uproarious and ribald as Bean’s ‘One Man, Two Guvnors’, which took comparable liberties with a Goldoni classic.
July 1940. After an aerial dog fight, Jack Absolute flies home to win the heart of his old flame, Lydia Languish. Jack’s advances soon turn to anarchy when the young heiress demands to be loved on her own, very particular terms.
Shock news: comedy lightning really does strike twice. As the ultra-British 1940’s types populating this farcical romp might put it, ‘Hurrah!’, revel in a high level of ridiculousness powered by line-by-line laughs and wonderfully well-timed comic performances from an ensemble of memorable characters. Mrs Malaprop, for one, will delight you with a feast of malapropisms which escalate with ever-increasing levels of rather naughty ‘double entendres’.
