Skylight

By David Hare

Directed by TBC

An amateur production by arrangement with Concord Theatricals Ltd

On a cold winter’s night, teacher Kyra, is preparing for an evening of nothing more exciting than supper and a batch of marking.  But her evening, and her peace, are disturbed by the arrival of two unexpected visitors.

First, Edward, the son of her former lover, keen to enlist her help with his father Tom, who he believes is falling apart following the death of his wife and Edward’s mother.  And then Tom himself, loud, uncompromising and full of criticism for her surroundings and new way of life but fundamentally lost without her.

That evening, the love and passion they once shared will hang in the balance. Can they re-find the path to each other and repair the deep bond between them?  Or is the gulf of their experience, their values, their frustration and anger with each other and themselves just too wide?

Skylight premiered in 1995 at the National Theatre, winning an Olivier award for Play of the Year in 1996.  It is an exploration not just of the divisions between two people in love, but also of the divisions in society – political, economic and ideological – as relevant today as it was when the play was written.
