A director, an actor and a playwright meet before rehearsals start on an incendiary new play set in Ulster. As misunderstandings and revelations emerge, the evening descends into the explosive dialogue and the sustained verbal and physical violence for which Ireland is known. Filled with the blackest humour, David Ireland is a writer who often makes you laugh, then immediately re-consider whether you should have done so. Not for the faint hearted!!
‘Infuriating, irreverent and capable of evoking the guiltiest laughter that will ever come out of your mouth, Ulster American is a master class in astonishing writing for the modern post-Me Too, post-Brexit world.’ The Edinburgh Review
‘Have you heard the one about the Englishman, the Irish woman and the American? Yes, any jokes beginning similarly have long been branded politically incorrect, but all the rules of PC are put through a shredder in David Ireland’s brutal, excoriating and blisteringly funny black comedy.’ Theatre Edinburgh
‘[David] Ireland brilliantly captures the bewilderment of a generation that knows the rules of social engagement have changed – whether on gender relations, national identity or global politics – but is hopelessly and hilariously inadequate when it comes to putting the new-found knowledge into practice.’ The Guardian
