It’s finally happening! After years of dreaming, careful planning, and fundraising, Bromley Little Theatre is stepping into a brand-new act. The building may be the same much-loved space that has hosted countless productions, but behind those familiar doors, something very different is taking shape. This is the first chapter in the story of our rebuild, one that will make the theatre more accessible, comfortable, and welcoming than ever before.
Scene One: Demolition of a Dream
From the moment the builders arrived, the theatre was alive with the sounds of change: slabs breaking, walls coming down, and the old stage door area being cleared away. What once felt like backstage clutter is now becoming the setting for something entirely new.
And just a few metres away, another transformation is taking place! Where the office once stood, a brand-new bar is beginning to emerge: a space designed for conversation, laughter, and that all-important interval drink. For audiences, it will be a place to gather and share the buzz of a show before the lights go down.
Scene Two: A Light in the Darkness
Every performance relies on energy, and so does this rebuild. Our tired old electrical intake is being replaced with a modern system, thanks to a carefully choreographed partnership between UK Power Networks, EDF, and our electricians. It’s a backstage drama of cables and careful timing. Unlike our on-stage dramas, this one ends with the lights staying firmly on!
Scene Three: Rise of the Lift
Perhaps the most exciting addition is still waiting in the wings. In Sweden, engineers are putting the finishing touches on a custom-built lift that will make our theatre fully accessible. Due to arrive in September, it will ensure that everyone can reach their seat without obstacles. For us, this lift isn’t just machinery, it’s a symbol of inclusion, and a promise that the joy of live theatre truly belongs to everyone.
Scene Four: The Importance of Being Volunteers
Of course, no production comes to life without its backstage crew. Volunteers have already rolled up their sleeves to tackle everything from plastering to clearing decades of forgotten items, including an iron safe, a Clavinova, and even an old Epidiascope. Thanks to their dedication, the new bar is almost ready for its debut! Soon, we’ll be calling on more volunteers to help paint and stock it, giving everyone the chance to play their part in this transformation.
All’s Well That Builds Well
